Kitchen Design Tips

Designing a kitchen is a very personal thing. From layout to the colour pallet, hardware and cabinetry, lighting and materials the choices are endless. Ensuring design and functionality work hand in hand to meet to enhance your lifestyle is an essential consideration when planning your new kitchen.

Lighting

Every kitchen needs good lighting. Having a big window to allow natural light in can create a sense of space and warmth even in a smaller kitchen. However, you might prefer the kitchen against a full wall with an island overlooking the family space and natural light provided by large sliding doors. Ceiling lighting should be well placed to avoid unnecessary shadows over workspaces and lighting in cabinets can highlight family heirlooms that are meaningful to you. You might also like to include a feature light; placing it over an island can add a design element while providing functionality.

Cabinetry

Cabinetry can be made in a variety of materials and can be customised to your space. When considering what product to use consider the overall aesthetic you want in your home as well as practical elements of care and function. For instances, you might like the look of shaker style cabinets, but do you want to dust them regularly? Or, if your child spills the sauce bottle through the cupboard is it easy to simply wipe over. Other considerations include open shelving vs cabinets or drawers. Think about what you need to store in your kitchen and design the space to place items conveniently in their own place.

Benchtop

The choice of benchtop materials needs to be aesthetically pleasing and practical. If you don’t like how it looks you might have that feeling of regret every time you are in the space for many years to come. Also, consider how the material functions; can you place hot pots on it, will it stain with spaghetti sauce, can you cut things directly on the bench? You may even like to choose different materials for the benches to meet different needs of a particular space.

Having the right lighting, cabinetry and benchtop can make a big difference in how you feel and function in the kitchen. Working with your custom home builder, cabinet maker and/or interior designer can help you streamline the process and make the right choices for your family and lifestyle.
