Creating a Mood Board can be exciting and overwhelming!
We generate excitement by adding colours, styling ideas, design pictures, and the myriad of things that we’d like to see in our new custom designed home. However, without some concrete ideas and focus your mood can become overwhelming as there’s no limit to the elements of your new home.
So … where do you begin?
Surprisingly, the best place to begin is looking at your current space. Walk through the home and write a list of the colours and design features you like. As you go include on your list the furniture you “must have” and any heirloom or special items you want to display, (You can check out our blog on displaying items for ideas).
Once your list is complete sit back and let your mind wonder to other homes you’ve visited and write down elements of those homes you like as well. As you consider these homes, as well as your own, you can begin to get a picture of your own style and things you desire in your home, be it functional or aesthetically pleasing!
Now with your list in hand, and a cuppa, jump online and grab some screen shots of the style of your dream kitchen. Then, go deeper, look at the hardware used on cabinets as well as the colours, bench tops, tiles, design features, if any, on doors and drawers, and note any feature lighting you like.
Now the challenge! Take each element and try to narrow it down to the one you like best. Starting with the cabinets, place all the pictures in a row and choose your favourite two. Then select your favourite bench tops. Put those pictures against the screenshots of the cabinets and have a look at the colours and style together. As you go eliminate the definite no’s and keep choosing the “best of” until you are down to your favourite one, or two.
With the varying elements of your kitchen chosen you will have a “feel” for your home. From here you can build onto your mood board with house colours for inside and out.
TIP: If you are struggling with colours it can be helpful to use a colour wheel. There’s some great youtube clips with tips and tricks on how to maximise the use of colour in your home. You can also talk with a colour expert at your local paint supply store. Understanding colour, and how light bounces off colour in your space, can help you choose the right colour for the mood you want in your home.
Once you have your kitchen mood board complete you can marry that with one for the overall aesthetic of your home. Keep building through each room of the house until you have created a solid picture of your dream home.
