Inside Home Maintenance

Now that you have completed your outside home maintenance, or a working through your plan, it’s time to consider the inside of your home. As Spring is such a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors combining your “spring clean” with “winter maintenance” this time of year will ensure you’re not stuck inside when the weather is perfect!

Forgive me for repeating myself but a word of caution, if you are unsure how to handle any of the jobs, be it working at heights or plumbing, please call a local professional. Don’t take any unnecessary risks to save a few dollars. It’s not worth it!

Remember too, family and friends with similar home features might be able to offer you some cleaning or maintenance tips. Online professional Cleaners and Tradies also provide professional advice. Like all online advice, tread carefully!

Work From The Ceiling Down

Rafters, fans and light fittings can be wiped over with a lint free cloth. Stubborn marks, like the geckos call card, can often be removed with a little warm soapy water. Be sure to dry with a lint free cloth to prevent water marks. As always, be sure to turn fans and lights off before doing any cleaning or maintenance. Check all the light bulbs on feature lights are screwed in properly and dust smoke alarms. You might also like to check any power points and cords you have permanently connected (like the TV, dishwasher and washing machine). A few moments to check anything that may be a fire hazard is worth the time!

Walls, Windows and Architraves

Similarly to the outdoors, regular cleaning can extend the life of paint work and ensure you pick up any unexpected damage. As you clean check for any “spoungy” spots in timber as this is a sign of water leaks. Pay particular attention around the windows and in the wet areas. Picking up leaks early can save thousands.

Plumbing

As you work around your home check taps and seals for leaks. Don’t tackle repairs unless you know how to … it can be quicker and more cost effective to call a plumber!!

If you’re game, grab a bucket to catch the excess water and clean the s-bend under sinks. This is often a place were drains can clog up. To help prevent build up in drains regularly run some drain cleaner through them. Whether you use a commercial or homemade product be sure to check the environmental rating, especially if you have septic system.

As you check your plumbing pay attention to other elements that could also allow water to leak. These include grout and silicon sealing around tiles etc. It likely, with a little advice, you can manage small repairs. Again, if you are unsure or it’s a big repair call your local tradesperson.

TIP: If managing time is a struggle try setting the time for 30mins, grab the family, put on some fun music, and just focus on one area. We often underestimate what can be achieved in a short period of time. Getting started is always a challenge so make a plan!

For now though, it’s time to light that fire, sit back and relax and enjoy the best of winter!!
